Abbott leads a reflective and dramatic ‘Messiah’
For the last few years the annual ‘Messiah’ has been a NZSO initiative and conducting duties have been shared by a number of Australians and the baroque specialist Nicholas McGegan. This year it was back, for the third time, to Graham Abbott, a conductor who was conducting his 75th performance of the work.

The orchestral playing was immensely incisive with the off stage band beautifully managed, and the combined choirs, from their hushed entrance to the blazing finish, were wonderfully taut and confident.

A packed Cathedral was here treated to a concert
of variety and solid achievement…. the choir sang
beautifully, and the halo effect of the Cathedral’s
acoustics suited it ideally.
